Chelsea Jewell and Llama were selected to undertake a 12 week studio residency as part of SWELL Sculpture 2024.
Jewell proposed the shopfront studio and its public interface to be used to explore;
performative making
evolving shopfront installations using light and the accretion of sculptural material
Sunday morning walking sculpture
material negotiations
tidal movement of sculpture in the public realm
the generative activation of vacant retail spaces
The residency proved integral to an exploration of embodied practice and facilitated a series of works that have relational aesthetics at their core. Material negotiations using light, place, site and colour along with developments in practices of care were possible through the commitment to daily studio work where the passage and rhythms of time, light and occupation were wholly generative .
Several making circles were hosted in the studio. The local community were invited into the space to engage in making and conversation with some of these outcomes being included in the collaborative work for SWELL.
